Sea turtles are such magnificent creatures. I love hand-crafting toys that connect kids to nature. I think it's so important to instil in our tamariki a love of our natural world and our shared responsibility to protect it. Pollution, illegal harvesting and habitat encroachment are just some of the threats sea turtles face in their survival.

I was inspired to crochet a range of wheke (octopus) after seeing some amazing creatures at our local Marine Education Centre.
Crocheted from 100% cotton yarn and filled with soft synthetic toy filling, my wheke feature embroidered eyes making them a safe playmate for babies. In fact they make a wonderful unique gift for children of all ages. Their tactile coiling tentacles are calming to pull on, twirl or fidget away any worries.
They come in a range of colours and two sizes: small measures 6cm high and large measures 12cm high.

Our clever clown of the Alps
New Zealand’s intelligent and famously cheeky mountain parrot, the kea, is the world's only true alpine parrot. Now endangered, they live only in the South Island of NZ, most commonly in or near alpine areas but also in native forests.
My crocheted kea make an ideal gift choice for young nature-lovers.
As kea fly, we’re treated to the beautiful blue and green markings that colour their wings and tail tip, and the stunning flash of vivid orange of their under-wing. To match the real symphony of plumage colours the kea displays, I wind multiple strands of wool and acrylic yarns through my crochet hook as I create each stitch. Kea are then filled with soft synthetic toy filling and measure 17cm from beak to tail (19cm wing to wing).

Our most iconic songbird
Unique to New Zealand, tui are one of our loudest and most commonly seen song birds. They use their down-curved beak to feed mainly on nectar from the flowers of native plants. While feeding on nectar, and eating their fair share of native fruits, they act as important pollinators and seed dispersers within our native forests.
Melodious and boisterous by nature, they're also remarkably beautiful! Their iridescent blue/green plumage shimmers in the sunshine, while their distinctive white throat tuft and dusting of fine white feathers around their neck, like a lacy neck collar, make them highly distinguishable.

Just like their real-life counterparts, my crocheted tui boast a kaleidoscope of hues that mirror the iridescence of their plumage. Using a blend of wool and acrylic yarns, I meticulously recreate the mesmerizing shades of blue, green, and white that adorn these stunning birds.
